Revisiting Loss: A Treatment for Complicated Grief
Dr. Katherine Shear, Marion E. Kenworthy Professor of Psychiatry in Social Work, will lead a one-day advanced clinical workshop on the treatment for complicated grief. The workshop will be held on Friday, November 7, 2008 from 9am-5pm at the Columbia University School of Social Work.
Complicated Grief (CG) is a prolonged acute grief response characterized by difficulty accepting the death of a loved one, persistent intense yearning and longing for the person who died, preoccupation with thoughts of this person, anger and bitterness, and feelings of guilty remorse related to the death. This workshop will:
- Describe an attachment-based model of grief and complicated grief
- Discuss the principles behind treatment of CG by revisiting the loss
- Outline a formulation of treatment goals
- Illustrate through video and role play demonstration the intervention some of the techniques of this treatment approach
- Discuss monitoring tools to facilitate and track treatment progress
